This course provides a general introduction to linguistics. After a brief history of the field and a general introduction into the area of language systems and theories, the core components of linguistics will be introduced: phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, discourse, and pragmatics. Theoretical and applied issues will be discussed through the analysis of fragments of language in class.
